Cancel insurance after your donated car has been picked up and the title hand-off is complete, not before. Use the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date. If Alabama requires you to return plates, cancel registration, or update registration status before ending coverage, do that first through the Alabama DMV. Cancelling early can leave you responsible for an uninsured loss on a car you still own, and some states penalize a lapse while a vehicle is still registered.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and title hand-off
Do not treat a scheduled pickup as the finish line. Confirm the vehicle actually left your possession and that you handed over the properly signed title or followed the title instructions you were given. If pickup is still imminent, keep coverage active until this hand-off is done. The insurer should not backdate cancellation to a time when you still owned or controlled the car.
Handle plates or registration
Before calling your insurer, confirm whether Alabama requires any plate surrender, registration cancellation, or registration-status update for a donated vehicle. Some states want plate or registration action before insurance ends. Other states let you keep or transfer plates after the vehicle is no longer yours. If you are unsure which rule applies to your situation, check with the Alabama DMV and finish that step first.
Call with the donation date
Call or message your insurance company after pickup, title hand-off, and any required plate or registration step are complete. Give the donation date as the pickup/title-transfer date. Say the vehicle is no longer in your possession because it was donated through Cruise Forward. Ask the representative to show that same date as the effective date for the insurance change.
Remove or cancel coverage
If you have a multi-car policy, remove only the donated vehicle and keep the rest of the policy active. If the donated vehicle was your only insured vehicle, cancel the auto policy effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. One continuous-coverage note: if you are buying or registering another vehicle soon, ask your agent how to avoid a gap that could affect your next policy or rate review.
Request any premium refund
If you paid the premium ahead of time, ask whether a prorated refund is due after the vehicle is removed or the policy is cancelled. Do not assume it will happen automatically. Ask how the refund will be sent and whether it will go back to the payment method, a mailed check, or a policy credit.
Keep written confirmation
Ask for written confirmation showing the vehicle, the effective date, and whether the policy was changed or cancelled. Save the email, cancellation notice, declarations page, receipt, and any refund record with your donation paperwork. Keep your pickup receipt and title documents in the same file. Why the order matters
The safe order is legal hand-off first, registration or plate housekeeping second, insurance change third. Insurance follows risk. Until the car is picked up and the title hand-off is complete, you may still be the person tied to the vehicle. If coverage ends early and something happens before pickup, the loss may be uninsured. Separately, some states connect insurance status to active registration. That is why you handle any Alabama DMV requirement before you end coverage.
Common questions
Can I cancel insurance the morning of pickup?
No. Keep the vehicle insured until pickup is complete and the title has been handed off. A planned pickup can change, and the car is still your responsibility until the hand-off happens. Cancelling before then can create an uninsured loss if the car is damaged, stolen, or involved in an incident.
What date should the insurer use?
Use the pickup/title-transfer date. That is the cleanest date because it matches the point when the donated vehicle left your possession and the title hand-off was completed. If your insurer asks for proof, use your pickup receipt, donation paperwork, title-copy records, or the written confirmation you receive from Cruise Forward.
What if I have more than one car on the policy?
Ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle. Do not cancel the entire policy if other household vehicles still need coverage. Confirm the remaining vehicles, drivers, limits, and payment amount after the change. Then ask whether the removed vehicle creates a prorated refund or a lower future bill.
